Elderly in the News

Due to the circumstances of the past year, many people have become accustomed to online communication and video-chatting services. Though configuring technology like Zoom and Google meets can be annoying and troublesome at times, a new study finds that chatting over Zoom could actually help protect older people against dementia. The study, conducted by the University of West London’s Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory, examined the communication of 11,418 men and women between 50-90 years old. Researchers found that participants who used online communication tools had less memory decline than those who only used traditional face-to-face communication. The study also stated that a combination of physical and virtual communication methods was most effective at slowing memory decline. Even as the pandemic brought many problems, the increased exposure to online communication methods is a welcomed benefit for seniors.
