A recent long-term study by IBM researchers may promise a breakthrough in Alzheimer's detection. The study found that writing patterns combined with Artificial Intelligence analysis can predict Alzheimer's years before symptoms start to show. In the study, participants were asked to write out a description of a drawing picturing a detailed scene. Researchers found slight discrepancies in their writing and language, particularly that one group of people had more repetitive word usage and some incorrect spelling, grammar, and capitalization. Many of this group of people would develop Alzheimer's nearly 7 and a half years later. Researchers continued by developing an AI program to detect these slight discrepancies, which was able to accurately predict which people would later be diagnosed with Alzheimer's about 75% of the time. These findings could lead to additional findings in early detection of other neurological illnesses, which researchers say also show distinctive language patterns years before symptoms start to show.
