Elderly in the News

For years, prediabetes has been a diagnosis given to older adults with a higher-than-normal blood glucose level. The diagnosis meant, for many people, that they were at higher risk for progressing to type 2 diabetes. However, a new study gives hope for those diagnosed with prediabetes. The study, published in journal JAMA Internal Medicine, finds that people with the condition are much more likely to return to normal blood glucose levels than to develop type 2 diabetes. The condition of prediabetes may not be as serious as previously thought, although doctors caution against completely ignoring possible signs of diabetes like elevated blood sugar levels. While it is still important to maintain healthy habits like nutritious diets and exercise, the diagnosis of prediabetes does not necessarily mean someone is doomed to have diabetes.
